Photokeratitis (sunburned corneas)

I had a patient call emergently this weekend with this exact condition…Photokeratitis or ultraviolet keratitis.

Photokeratitis is a painful eye condition caused by exposure of INSUFFICIENTLY PROTECTED EYES to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from either natura…l(SUN) or artificial(welders flash) sources.

Photokeratitis is akin to a sunburn of the cornea and conjunctiva, and is not usually noticed until several hours after exposure. Symptoms include increased tears and a feeling of PAIN, likened to having sand in the eyes.

The injury MAY BE PREVENTED by wearing eye protection that blocks most of the ultraviolet radiation, such as SUNGLASSES rated for sufficient UV protection, welding goggles with the proper filters, a welder’s helmet, , or appropriate snow goggles.

NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO STOP IN AND CHECK OUT ALL OUR GREAT SUNGLASSES, FASHION OR SPORTY!!

  1. I recently visited the Southwest Eye Care office in Belle Plaine, MN. I was traveling for work, and needed eyeglass repair. The receptionst was courteous, and the Technician (Pam I belive) ewas extremely helpful. Being from New Jersey, I didn’t expect such a great experience. My glasses were repaired while I waited.

Kudos to the Belle Plaine office!!!
